When you arrive to do your experiment you will find a block, ruler, funnel, ring stand, 10cc graduated cylinder and 50cc beaker. First use the ruler to measure the length, width, and depth of the block. Record these measurements along with your best estimate of the uncertainty in them. Next add water to the beaker until it reaches the 25cc mark on the side. Drop the block into the beaker, being careful not to splash any water out of the beaker. Record the new volume using the scale on the beaker along with your best estimate of the uncertainty in these readings. Remove the block from the beaker and dry it thoroughly. Set up the ring stand so that the funnel is directly over the graduated cylinder and the beaker is clamped above the funnel and centered over it. The set up is shown in Figure 1 on the schematics page (use the link above). Carefully fill the beaker to the very top with water. If any extra water spills into the funnel and graduated cylinder, remove and dry them. Carefully drop the block into the beaker, making sure that no water splashes out that isn't caught by the funnel. After all the water has drained from the funnel into the graduated cylinder, record the volume of water and estimate the uncertainty in this measurement. Go to the raw data page for this experiment and electronically submit your results as instructed there. |
