In most cases if you need to order a component you will need to know the:

- pin outs

- specifications

- package information

It always helps to know who the manufacturer of the device is. Usually the first two letters of the component part number indicates the manufacturer. Here are some commonly used names:-

Typical Part Number

Manufacturer

LM XYZ

National Semiconductor

AD XYZ

Analog Devices

MC XYZ

Motorola

If you are in luck and if YOU DO KNOW THE PART NUMBER, then use some internet web based search engines; enter the part number exactly as it appears with letters in the search field. From my experience, Google has performed with amazing accuracy. Following are some direct links to manufacturers. Please note that many data sheets and large files are in PDF format, you will need to download Adobe Acrobat to read these files.
